When life seems scary or unsettling, like it does after this recent horrible event, remember these 3 keys to find your way back to peace and calm.
First, remember the remedy to fear is love. Find someone, starting with yourself first, to which you can offer some sort of loving or kind gesture. The more love you show, the smaller the fear becomes. Love is a perceptible energy and has a power that grows exponentially starting with the smallest of gestures. Be the start of a love storm. This is the action we can take right this minute and it is more powerful than fighting about changing laws and talking politics (though there is no question that our laws need to better reflect our purpose as a nation). Loving kindness is immediate and sweeping.
Second, Reach out to someone you know is alone. During this sort of event, we can tend to feel anxious and alone. If you are alone, make a connection with a neighbor, friend or family member right now. Try to minimize watching the news, which can make the walls close in tighter sometimes. Instead call a friend or loved one, if only to say, “Hello, I’m here.”
Third, check your relationship fences and make sure they are constructed with respect for yourself and others. Regardless of our differences, we can build common ground on our shared desire to be respected. It is a basic need, and when we figure out how to offer this to one another on a regular basis, so much of the manipulation of terror will fall on deaf ears. When we are rooted in love and respect for self and others we are stronger than fear.
